3 Reasons Why There May Be A Burning Smell When You Turn On Your Heat

During the Winter months, it is very likely you will experience a burning smell when you turn on your heat.

But do you know why this smell may be occurring? Here are three reasons why:

1. Dust/Dirt: if you smell a burning smell the first few times you are firing up your heat, it is probably because there are dust and dirt particles that have settled on the components inside of your heating system. But don't worry, if this is the case the particles will burn away after a few uses.

2. Burning Plastic: if you can smell what seems to be burning plastic coming from your HVAC system, you need to immediately investigate it. Not only can this harm your system, it can harm you as well due to the fact that when plastic burns, it gives off toxic fumes that are extremely dangerous. Something could be lodged in the heater, such as a child's toy or plastic bottle, which is causing this smell.

3. Electrical Burning: Electrical issues are another common cause of burning smells coming from your heater, and should also be investigated immediately. A burning electrical smell is often the sign of a serious electrical fault somewhere that needs to be fixed immediately.

If you are experiencing any of these smells while turning on your heat in the Winter, you should contact your HVAC provider immediately.
